Romanian in 16 phrases.

Most young people in Bucharest speak good English, but a few Romanian phrases go a long way. Romanian is a Latin language, so if you know some Italian, Spanish or French, many of them will look familiar.

Eating & drinking

Apă platăA-puh PLA-tuh

Still water, without bubbles.

Apă mineralăA-puh mee-neh-RA-luh

Sparkling water. In Romania, "minerală" means fizzy, so don't order it if you want still water.

Poftă bună!POF-tuh BOO-nuh

Enjoy your meal.

Noroc!no-ROK

Cheers! It also means luck.

Nota, vă rogNO-ta vuh ROG

How much is it?

Unde este…?OON-deh YES-teh

Intrare / Ieșireeen-TRA-reh / yeh-SHEE-reh

Entrance / exit, on signs everywhere.

Still or sparkling? This is the one that catches visitors out. Apă plată is still water; apă minerală is sparkling. When the waiter asks „plată sau minerală?”, that's the question. The city says tap water is drinkable, but restaurants serve bottled water.
